Sam took the signed papers from the kid sitting opposite him and looked them over one more time, making sure every i was dotted and every t crossed. When he'd satisfied himself, he held out his right hand toward the new recruit.

"Looks like you're set, Mr. Jackson," he said. "You'll report for boot camp in six weeks. You'll be notified as to time and place."

As the kid shook his hand and then stood up smiling, Sam idly tried to recall a time when he'd been that young. That eager to start a career in the Marines.

"Thank you, sir," Henry Jackson, freshly signed Marine boot said.

Sam shook his head and stood up. "Gunnery Sergeant, Mr. Jackson. You don't call Sergeants, 'sir'. We're not officers. We work for a living."

"Yes, sir, Gunnery Sergeant." Then, still grinning, he turned around and marched at full attention out the door of the recruitment station and into the sunshine.

Someone behind Sam chuckled and he half turned to smile at Staff Sergeant Jake Cutter. "Is it me," Sam asked, "or are these kids getting younger every year?"

"It's not you, Sam," Jake told him with a slow shake of his head. "They are younger. Hell, the only other alternative is that we're getting old, and I don't accept that."

"Me, neither," Sam said and sat down to file Henry Jackson's recruitment papers.

"So," Jake asked, swiveling in his seat until the ancient wooden desk chair creaked like an old man getting out of a tub, "how's life in Romper Room?"

He leaned back in his own chair, staring out the storefront window at the scene beyond. All right, he told himself. Maybe it wasn't the entire world that had changed. The view out the window was the same as always. Pedestrians hustled from one store to the next, intent on their business while skateboarding teenagers made the whole place an obstacle course.

He'd been in the recruitment office two months and still had nearly a year to go on this duty assignment. Damn shame, he thought, since working recruitment gave a man too much time to think. What he needed was action. Something to do. Troops to prepare for combat. Enemies to attack. Something to focus himself on. Something to take his mind off Michelle and the twins and the rest of his life.

Sighing, he clapped one hand over his eyes. He was just tired, he assured himself. That's why thoughts of Michelle plagued him. That's why he couldn't seem to keep his mind from veering toward her. Fatigue could really mess a man up. Hell, he hadn't had a decent night's sleep since the twins arrived. And he couldn't really blame it on them, either.

They weren't crying all night, it was just that Sam seemed to hear
